Reading Recovery Steps
1. Rereading
familiar books and yesterdays new book for a running record.
2. Letter identification and making and breaking letters.
This gives the student daily practice with letters and how they make words.
3. Writing a story. The student
and the teacher create text, working on direction, learning letters, hearing sounds in words with the goal being student independent
writing.
4. Cutting up the story. The teacher prints the sentence on a strip of paper and
then cuts the story up into words for the student to put the sentence together and read it to see if it makes sense.
The cut-up sentence is put into an envelope and goes home. The student then will put the story together for a parent.
5. Introducing of a new book and first attempt reading of the new book. The student can practice skills
to read text.
